What we were solving
\We were approached at by SCNM to rebuild their large .edu website, as well as their medical center website. The school wanted a fresh design as well as a site that worked well on mobile.
To start a large project like this on the right foot, we set out to find trends that worked well on other responsive educational sites and sought out how to improve on these practices.
After we planned out the content in a week of post it notes and template mapping, and later making some HTML wireframes with our designer got to work on making a beautiful layout that the client loved.
With our content being served in one of four templates, the task of developing the website was pretty straight forward, thanks to the prudent planning we had taken the time to do.
Using SASS includes, we were able to change the theme colors for the Medical Center site quickly just by replacing the base.sass file instead of making a whole new style sheet.
The sidebar navigation was a special treat to design. It had to have the ability to be nested four layers deep. Three at desktop, and Four on mobile, as the main navigation would get pulled into the nested lists to save space on mobile.
In the end, SCNM was very happy with the results of our work. Using proper planning methods, while taking longer to get the ball rolling, paid off in the long run.
